You have three Lightning materia, for example, so it's likely that not all AP was distributed equally. You can fight a maximum of 118 groups of three Goblins without breaking the battle plan, which I guarantee is overkill. I needed 102 battles this time around.Here be the second detour. In preparation for the Underwater Reactor and Midgar, you once again need to put the story on hold to grind AP. Specifically, you need to unlock Bolt3, Cure3 and Ultima; the Barrier (+Reflect), Comet (+Comet2), Contain (+Break, +Tornado), Full Cure (+Full Cure) and Heal materia tag along to gather AP. This will shorten the third detour - and what else are you going to fill those materia slots with?So, why Goblins? Goblins are the top AP pick at this point in the game; with double growth equipment, they give out more AP (40) than EXP (20)! The downside is that the AP gained is very little, meaning you need to sit through a lot of battles to get the total amount you need.As for the battles themselves... I mean, come on. Sure, repeated Comets (and later Ultimas) are expensive MP-wise, but you've got the Highwind nearby to heal up for free.
